Actualizado: 19 mar 2021

Founded in New York by Martin Goodman in 1939, Marvel is today a related media company. It began in 1933, when its first comics were published in Western Super novel Magazine, and in 1939, it gained its first publication as Marvel.

In its first comic book, Timely launches Marvel Comics, featuring the android Human Torch and Namor, an underwater prince who hated humans. The success of the magazine gives rise to dozens of heroes, such as Captain America.

After the war, the numbers started to drop even more. The publisher, once Timely, now Atlas, almost went bankrupt and got back on its feet with DC comics. With the popularization of competing comics, Marvel ended up investing in its own teams. In addition, Jack Kirby came to prominence again, now with the help of Stan Lee. Together, the two created The Fantastic Four and marked the beginning of the publishing house under the Marvel name. Also the creation of characters such as Iron Man and Spider-Man, helped Stan Lee's consolidation.

After many years of ups and downs, during the 1980s graphic design gained recognition, and for Marvel, the 1990s marked the company's exponential growth, ushering in an era. At the same time, the characters were also gaining audiovisual adaptations.

In the 2000s the publisher re-energized itself in different media. Joe Quesada becomes the editor-in-chief and brings back classic characters such as Thor and Captain America, and at the same time, Avi Arad starts licensing the characters for the movies.

In addition, the publisher began to invest in imprints. In this way, alternative universes and more mature stories became part of the recurrent publications. The new editorial vision and the space in theaters generated an exponential growth for the company.

In 2009, Marvel Entertainment was bought by the Walt Disney Company, starting a new phase. In this new phase, new versions of the movies were made and with them, made history with box office records and innovation.
